ABC News Launches Round-the-Clock Live Coverage Platform

The network expands its digital footprint with continuous streaming of breaking news and live events to compete in the 24-hour news cycle.

By Duabbly Staff

ABC News has rolled out an expanded live streaming service designed to keep audiences connected to developing stories and major events as they unfold throughout the day and night. The move represents the network's latest effort to strengthen its digital presence in an increasingly competitive media landscape where viewers expect immediate access to news from multiple platforms and devices.

The launch of ABC News Live reflects broader industry trends as traditional television networks adapt to changing consumption habits. Rather than limiting breaking news coverage to scheduled broadcast windows, the service provides continuous access to reporting, analysis, and live event coverage. This approach acknowledges that significant news developments no longer follow predictable schedules, and audiences have grown accustomed to accessing information whenever they choose.

The expansion of live streaming capabilities follows years of industry transformation driven by cord-cutting and the proliferation of streaming services. Major news organizations have invested heavily in digital infrastructure to reach viewers who increasingly turn to online sources rather than cable news channels. ABC News, like its competitors, faces pressure to maintain audience engagement across multiple platforms while generating revenue from digital advertising and partnerships.

ABC News Live operates as a dedicated channel within the network's broader digital ecosystem, complementing traditional broadcast programming and the network's established news website and mobile applications. By consolidating live coverage into a single streaming platform, the network aims to simplify access for viewers seeking continuous news updates without having to navigate multiple websites or applications.

The service encompasses not only breaking news but also coverage of significant live events including political gatherings, natural disasters, international developments, and other moments of national importance. This comprehensive approach positions ABC News Live as a primary destination for viewers who want to follow stories in real time rather than waiting for summarized reports on scheduled newscasts.

The platform represents an investment in infrastructure and staffing as ABC News maintains operations across multiple time zones to provide coverage during evening hours, weekends, and overnight periods when traditional news broadcasts do not typically air. This requires the network to expand its workforce and technological capabilities to sustain continuous operations.

Advertisers have shown interest in sponsoring live streaming content, recognizing the engaged audiences that gather around breaking news and significant events. This advertising interest helps offset the costs of maintaining round-the-clock coverage operations. Networks have discovered that audiences watching live news events tend to remain engaged for extended periods, creating valuable advertising opportunities.

The launch also reflects ABC News' broader digital strategy as parent company Disney has emphasized the importance of growing streaming services and digital platforms. Within this corporate context, expanding ABC News Live aligns with company priorities to build sustainable digital revenue streams and reduce dependence on traditional broadcast advertising.

Competitors including CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News have operated live streaming services for years, establishing audience expectations for continuous news access. ABC News' expansion of its live coverage capabilities allows it to more directly compete with these established services while leveraging its reputation and existing news gathering resources.

The technical infrastructure supporting ABC News Live builds on existing systems the network developed for streaming special events and breaking news coverage. This foundation has been expanded to support continuous operations with backup systems and redundancies ensuring service availability during high-traffic periods when major news breaks.

Audience analytics will likely play an important role in shaping how ABC News allocates resources across ABC News Live and its traditional broadcast programming. The network can track viewer behavior, watch time, and engagement metrics to understand which types of content and presentation styles resonate with streaming audiences versus broadcast viewers.

The expansion of ABC News Live also reflects recognition that younger audiences in particular have developed fundamentally different news consumption habits than older generations. By providing continuous streaming access, the network aims to reach viewers who never watch traditional television news broadcasts but remain interested in staying informed about significant events.

Looking forward, ABC News and other major networks will continue adjusting their strategies as digital platforms evolve and audience preferences shift. The success of ABC News Live will depend on whether the network can maintain consistent quality across continuous operations while building an audience loyal enough to support the venture through advertising and potentially subscription-based offerings.

The broader news industry will watch how ABC News' investment in live streaming affects its overall audience metrics and financial performance. These results will likely influence how other news organizations prioritize digital expansion and live coverage, shaping the media landscape for years to come.

OpenAI Launches GPT-5 With Multimodal Reasoning Capabilities

The latest model from OpenAI can analyze video in real time and solve complex multi-step problems, marking a significant leap in AI reasoning.

OpenAI has released its most capable model to date, GPT-5, featuring real-time video analysis and dramatically improved multi-step reasoning that the company says surpasses expert human performance on a range of benchmarks.

The model, announced at a San Francisco event, processes text, images, audio and video simultaneously. In demos, GPT-5 was shown diagnosing a mechanical fault from a short clip, drafting a legal brief from scanned documents and composing functional code from a hand-drawn wireframe.

Chief executive Sam Altman called it "the most capable AI system ever deployed to the public," while cautioning that the technology still makes mistakes and requires human oversight for high-stakes decisions.

Independent researchers who received early access praised GPT-5's coherence over long documents and its sharply reduced tendency to "hallucinate" plausible-sounding falsehoods. On the MMLU benchmark, which tests knowledge across 57 academic subjects, GPT-5 scored 92.4 percent, compared with around 86 percent for its predecessor GPT-4.

Pricing starts at $0.01 per thousand input tokens for API users, roughly half the cost of GPT-4 Turbo at launch. A version integrated into ChatGPT Plus will roll out over the coming weeks.

Critics from the AI safety community urged the company to slow deployment until independent auditors can fully assess risks. "Capability gains of this magnitude deserve more than a four-week red-team window," said Helen Park, a researcher at the Center for AI Safety.

OpenAI said it has implemented new safeguards against misuse, including a stricter content policy and an enhanced detection system for synthetic media generated by the model.
