Labor Day Sales Peak as Retailers Slash Prices Across Home, Fashion, Outdoor Gear

Major discounts dominate the holiday weekend, with savings up to 75% on summer merchandise as stores clear inventory before fall.

By Duabbly Staff

The unofficial end of summer brings more than just a long weekendβ€”it signals the arrival of Labor Day sales that have millions of Americans heading to stores and browsing online in search of bargains. Nearly three-quarters of shoppers plan to take advantage of the promotional period over the coming days, according to data from RetailMeNot, as retailers aggressively discount merchandise across multiple categories.

Retailers have long used Labor Day as a clearing event, strategically marking down inventory to make room for incoming fall stock. This year's sales reflect a predictable pattern: summer-oriented merchandise is experiencing the steepest cuts, with discounts reaching as much as 75 percent at major retailers. The most significant savings are concentrated in several key areas that experts say shoppers should prioritize if they're looking to maximize their purchasing power.

Furniture represents one of the strongest deal categories during this shopping period. Major appliances follow closely behind, with retailers offering substantial reductions on everything from refrigerators to washing machines. Mattress sales have also become a Labor Day staple, with many furniture and bedding companies using the weekend to move inventory and attract new customers. These categories remain consistent year after year as predictable opportunities for serious savings.

Warm-weather apparel dominates the sale landscape as well. According to Vipin Porwal, CEO and consumer savings expert at Smarty, a shopping and rewards platform, retailers deliberately reduce prices on summer clothing during Labor Day sales to clear warm weather inventory and prepare shelf space for fall collections. This strategy creates an ideal window for shoppers to stock up on basics they'll continue wearing as temperatures gradually cool over the coming weeks.

Outdoor gear has joined the traditional sale rotation, with camping equipment, travel accessories, and recreational items seeing significant markdowns. Luggage sets, portable seating, and travel-related products are moving quickly as stores liquidate summer inventory. This expansion beyond traditional categories offers shoppers more variety when hunting for deals.

Homeware and smaller appliances, particularly cleaning equipment, have emerged as another major discount area. Cordless vacuums and other cleaning tools are experiencing strong promotional pricing. Customer reviews suggest these products maintain their quality despite the reduced prices, with highly-rated models earning thousands of positive ratings from verified purchasers.

Bedding and household textiles represent another prime opportunity for savings. Premium blankets and quilted bedding items are seeing discounts of 60 percent or more at various retailers. These products appeal to shoppers looking to refresh their homes before the change of seasons without paying full price.

Kitchen equipment rounds out the major sale categories. Cookware sets and kitchen gadgets are available at reduced prices across multiple retailers, with ceramic nonstick sets experiencing particular promotional activity. Home improvement retailers are also participating in the sales event, offering deals on outdoor furniture and garden-related items.

Footwear commands significant attention during the Labor Day weekend. Athletic shoes and casual sneakers are seeing price reductions of 30 percent or more. Popular running shoe models with recognized endorsements from medical organizations are moving at promotional prices, attracting both athletes and casual wearers seeking quality footwear at lower price points.

Retailers participating in the sales push include major online platforms, department stores, specialty athletic retailers, home improvement chains, and outdoor recreation specialists. The breadth of participation ensures consumers can find deals across nearly every retail segment. Price comparisons show that identical items often receive different discount percentages across different retailers, making comparison shopping worthwhile for significant purchases.

Experts caution that not all Labor Day deals represent genuine savings opportunities. Technology products, for instance, are typically advised against for purchase during this period, as better discounts often emerge later in the year. Shoppers should exercise discretion and research pricing trends before committing to major technology purchases.

The timing of Labor Day sales creates a unique convergence of factors that benefits consumers. Retailers need to clear space, supply chains have been optimized throughout the season, and inventory levels are high. This combination creates genuine bargaining opportunities rather than artificial markdowns that offer little actual savings.

For shoppers planning to participate in the weekend sales, focusing on the identified categoriesβ€”summer clothing, outdoor gear, furniture, appliances, and beddingβ€”will likely yield the most satisfying results. Many shoppers plan to venture into physical stores rather than shop exclusively online, suggesting the traditional retail experience remains important for evaluating products before purchase.

As the Labor Day weekend progresses, inventory on discounted items will likely diminish, particularly for bestselling products and sizes. Shoppers hoping to secure the best selection within each category may want to prioritize their shopping earlier in the weekend rather than waiting until the final hours of the promotional period.

OpenAI Launches GPT-5 With Multimodal Reasoning Capabilities

The latest model from OpenAI can analyze video in real time and solve complex multi-step problems, marking a significant leap in AI reasoning.

OpenAI has released its most capable model to date, GPT-5, featuring real-time video analysis and dramatically improved multi-step reasoning that the company says surpasses expert human performance on a range of benchmarks.

The model, announced at a San Francisco event, processes text, images, audio and video simultaneously. In demos, GPT-5 was shown diagnosing a mechanical fault from a short clip, drafting a legal brief from scanned documents and composing functional code from a hand-drawn wireframe.

Chief executive Sam Altman called it "the most capable AI system ever deployed to the public," while cautioning that the technology still makes mistakes and requires human oversight for high-stakes decisions.

Independent researchers who received early access praised GPT-5's coherence over long documents and its sharply reduced tendency to "hallucinate" plausible-sounding falsehoods. On the MMLU benchmark, which tests knowledge across 57 academic subjects, GPT-5 scored 92.4 percent, compared with around 86 percent for its predecessor GPT-4.

Pricing starts at $0.01 per thousand input tokens for API users, roughly half the cost of GPT-4 Turbo at launch. A version integrated into ChatGPT Plus will roll out over the coming weeks.

Critics from the AI safety community urged the company to slow deployment until independent auditors can fully assess risks. "Capability gains of this magnitude deserve more than a four-week red-team window," said Helen Park, a researcher at the Center for AI Safety.

OpenAI said it has implemented new safeguards against misuse, including a stricter content policy and an enhanced detection system for synthetic media generated by the model.
